Ebook About
The world is not always what we think it is. This beautifully designed book presents unusual borders, enclaves and exclaves, divided or non-existent cities and islands. Numerous conflicts have left countries divided and often shattered. Remnants of countries can by design or accident be left behind as a legal anomaly in this complex world. Most people believe that a country’s borders are clearly defined: just lines that separate countries. Everything on one side of the line belongs to one country and everything on the other side belongs to another country. This might be the case most of the time, but there are unusual exceptions to this unwritten rule.Examples include:• Campione d’Italia where Italian residents have to travel 15km through Switzerland to reach the nearest available Italian territory• Tomb of Suleyman Shah which is a tiny Turkish enclave within Syria which was moved closer to Turkey when Lake Assad was created but still stayed in Syria• Pheasant Island which for half a year belongs to the Spanish city of Irun, and the remaining half, to its French twin-town, Hendaye• Canadian Stanstead and American Beebe Plain where the boundary line runs along the centre of the main street, so that the houses on one side of the street are in Canada and on the other in the United StatesThese and many more instances are captured in this fascinating book full of strange geographical intrigue.

Book The Atlas of Unusual Borders: Discover intriguing boundaries, territories and geographical curiosities Review :

I love border quirks and not long before the pandemic got a kick out of straddling the border at Point Roberts, a tiny bit of the US physically connected only to Canada. The stories behind how imaginary lines that sometimes cause considerable grief are fascinating and I was delighted to find a book full of them.Until, that is, I discovered firsthand that the reviewers who warned that the maps were almost completely useless weren't kidding. Whoever handled design for this book should be flogged. As other reviewers have noted, it's impossible to make sense of maps when land is shown as blue and water is shown as grey – especially if there are all sorts of unidentified solid and dotted lines of varying widths. It MIGHT have helped a little (but only a little) if the map key had been at the beginning of the book rather than at the very end. What's more, dark blue background photos on many pages are almost all incomprehensible and the type is inexplicably small and light (an all too common problem with British books). It is literally a book that will give you a headache.Meanwhile, the sequencing is pretty much random. Why not organize by continent (and perhaps occasionally cross-reference to similar stories elsewhere in the world)? While there's a lot of fascinating info here – I'm glad I read the book – there's at least one error: Washington DC is not "leased to the U.S. Federal government by the states of Maryland and Virginia." The original 10-mile square DC was on land ceded by Maryland and Virginia in 1790. But in 1847 Virginia cleverly convinced the US government that the portion west of the Potomac would surely never be needed (mind you, the Pentagon is located there now) and should be returned to Virginia.I hope that in time there's a second edition of this book and that it reflects a thorough redesign. Here's another geographic quirk to consider adding: Carter Lake – a bit of Iowa stranded in Nebraska (between the Omaha airport and downtown).
